1942, Przemyśl. Sixteen-year-old Stefania Podgórska has worked for years for a Jewish family in their grocery store. They get along well, and the girl even has a marriage engagement with their son—though it has to be kept secret, because she is Catholic and Izia Diamant is Jewish. Everything changes with the invasion of the German army: the city is occupied, and the Diamant family is relocated to the ghetto. Stefania is left alone—without work and support—with a little sister in her arms. But one day, Izia’s brother appears at her doorstep—someone who managed to escape the death camp.
