Which boy in childhood didn’t dream of being Sherlock Holmes? I think the vast majority wanted to (I certainly did). Calle Blomkvist also really wants to become a detective—really a detective, not just to play at being one. It’s a pleasure, reading this book, to follow the lives of its heroes and to share their joys and troubles with them, those joys and troubles that are so familiar to everyone “born from childhood.”

As always when you read any of Astrid Lindgren’s books, in your head real enough images are created that it starts to feel as if this were not an invented story at all, but reality—coming to you for a brief moment from another country and already from the past century.
