The frigate “Lavr Georgievich,” captained by the gallant, celebrated, wise, and formidable Sir Suer-Veer, gets lost in the labyrinths of a certain fantastic archipelago, where an immense number of islands can be found. Together with the captain, the islands are uncovered by the pilot Katsman, the first officer Pakhomych, the junior officer Khrenov, the mechanic Semyonov, the boatswain Chugaylo, and the narrator’s companion—a friend, helper, and constant conversationalist of the captain. Sometimes the sailors help discover the islands—most often, they remain onboard. “The Island of True Happiness,” “The Island of Naked Women,” “The Island of Kraty,” “The Island of Beggars,” “The Island Sent to…,” “The Island of Warm Puppies,” “The Island of Leshi Mezinov”… The ultimate goal is “The Island of Truth,” which the author reaches even without Suer-Veer, because truth is known in solitude.
