“The Fate of a Man” is a story about the Great Patriotic War, written in 1956–1957. It is one of the first works of Soviet literature that depicts the war openly and vividly. The story describes captivity, German camps, escape, return to the front, the loss of loved ones, the harsh time after the war, the search for love, and the struggle against loneliness. The story was adapted into a film by Sergey Bondarchuk, who also played the main role. The film received the Grand Prize at the Moscow Film Festival in 1959. “Tales from the Don” is a collection of 6 stories describing events of the Civil War. The action takes place on the Don, but the events and feelings described in these stories can be seen across all of Russia. Wartime reveals true human qualities, and these novellas show who was able to preserve their dignity in difficult times—and who was not.
