«The Country of Laughter» is Carroll’s debut novel, still considered by many to be almost the pinnacle of his work.
The main character of the book is Thomas Abby, who works as a teacher at a college. He decides to write a biography of his favorite writer, Marshall France. Gradually, his search leads him to a small town, Galen, where France spent his final years. And that’s where the oddities begin… The fact that the townspeople clearly resist talking about the writer is still understandable—France didn’t like being the object of attention, and his acquaintances keep his memory. But what about what’s going on around them—like how can it be understood that the residents are clearly glad about a little boy being killed under a car? Of course, outwardly they show grief—but they don’t quite manage it… And then it only gets worse… And how all this will end can hardly be predicted.
Additional information: Jonathan Carroll is an American living in Vienna. He is called a worthy successor to the tradition—both to the famous namesake and to G.G. Márquez—and not without a considerable dose of Richard Bach.
