The Sorrows of Young Werther

The story takes place in one of the small German towns at the end of the 18th century. Werther’s letters are addressed to his friend Wilhelm. In them, the author seeks not so much to describe events from life, but to convey his feelings—what the surrounding world evokes in him.

Werther, a young man from an not well-off family, educated, inclined toward painting and poetry, settles in a small town in order to be alone. He enjoys nature, talks with simple people, reads his beloved Homer, paints. At a country ball for young people he meets Charlotte S. and falls for her head over heels…
