Early poetic prose by the author. Wilde comparatively rarely turned to poetic work after the publication of “Poems” (1881). Early works by Wilde the poet were received quite highly. However, the poetry of the 1880s (including such a canonical poem as “The House of the Prostitute”) failed to attract attention, and only “The Ballad of Reading Gaol” convinced people of his creative abilities as a poet.
