Garrard Conley was nineteen when, at the insistence of his parents, he had to undergo conversion therapy based on biblical teaching that promised to “heal” his sexual orientation. As the son of a Baptist minister from rural Arkansas, known for his conservative views, Garrard had to travel a long and difficult road in order to accept his homosexuality and find himself. In 2018, a feature film, “Boy Erased,” was released based on his memoirs, starring Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, and Lucas Hedges in the lead roles.
