Francis Bret Harte is an American writer, author of numerous novels, short stories, and plays, who won worldwide fame with works devoted to the life of California gold seekers. He lived for a long time in California, where he tried many professions in search of income. He began writing as a journalist. After the publication of stories about gold seekers (“The Luck of the Roaring Camp,” and others), Bret Harte became one of the best-known writers in America and Europe. His novel “Gabriel Conroy” (1876) had a significant influence on the development of European psychological prose of the 20th century. Harte’s stories stand out for unexpected situations, humor, sometimes skeptical irony, as well as the originality and vividness of the human types depicted, and the unusual way the author portrays everyday life and morals.
“Out of the Desert,” “Susy,” “Clarence Brant” (1998), make up a trilogy, centered on the life story of the main character—Clarence Brant. Like many other works by B. Harte, these novellas tell about the life of gold seekers, the corrupting power of gold, the courage of people rejected by bourgeois society.
