The main hero of the novel, Kai, is a successful young man who lacks neither money nor female attention. He moves from place to place without attaching himself for long—to any location, to any people, or to life circumstances. He lives by laws that are completely unclear to those around him, and only partly understood by himself. With women, he plays complex, refined games; flirting and the joy of winning replace love for him.
Sometimes Kai dreams of a quiet, settled life on his estate—until, all of a sudden, he breaks away and rushes into a бурнa, eventful life full of entertainments, perhaps only because of the contradictions of human nature.
The novel’s main theme is racing and competition, yet the background is an aristocratic, leisurely lifestyle and romantic flirtation. For some readers, the book may remind them of “A Hero of Our Time” by Lermontov: the same dissatisfaction with what you have, the same chase for intense, strong feelings that don’t last long.
