In the book “Medieval Masters and the Geniuses of the Renaissance,” Paola Dmitrievna Volkova covers an extensive historical period and tells us about the brightest centuries in the development of art—from trecento, the period of the Protorenaissance, to seicento, the very sunset of the Renaissance. We’ll travel from the Siena school of painting to the rise of Baroque and Rococo. We’ll learn about great works such as Giotto’s “The Kiss of Judas” and Sandro Botticelli’s “Spring,” and we’ll hear about Bosch and his “Ship of Fools,” as well as Velázquez’s “Las Meninas.”
Paola Dmitrievna Volkova is a Soviet and Russian art historian, Doctor of Arts, a historian of culture, Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR. She graduated from Moscow State University (1953) with a degree in “Art Historian.” She taught at VGIK in the Higher Courses for Screenwriters and Directors. Paola Volkova is the author and host of the documentary TV series “Bridge Over the Abyss” (2011–2012) about the history of world painting for the Culture TV channel.
