Description
Two intellectuals, frightened by the advance of the political reaction after the death of Alexander II, decide to abandon completely their beliefs, conscience, and even their own opinion—in order to become “law-abiding” townspeople and simply survive. Their diligent immersion in a world of ostentatious piety, denunciation, and “moderation” turns into a chain of grotesque, tragicomic situations that reveal the absurdity of the social order.
