People settled near a small Salt Lake, just steps from the river Vychegda, as far back as the 15th century. The most enterprising among them started building the first “salt boiling sheds” on the shore even then—special devices for “boiling salt.” Later, these boiling sheds became the basis for a large industrial and trading center—Salt of Vychegda (Soli Vychegodsk)—whose prosperity was helped not only by salt-making, but also by its convenient location on a navigable river. But this place gained real fame after the arrival here of the energetic and enterprising Stroganov family. In 1526, Anika Stroganov bought the first “salt boiling sheds” on the shore of the Salt Lake, which later allowed the Stroganovs to become owners of not only unprecedented wealth, but also boundless power and authority.
