The first book of the famous “Barsetshire Chronicles” is a subtle satire on Victorian society.

When reformer John Bold begins his campaign against a church shelter, he doesn’t realize that he is attacking the future father-in-law. A classic of English literature where personal dramas intertwine with social conflicts.

The central place in Anthony Trollope’s work is occupied by the cycle “Barsetshire Chronicles,” set in the fictional town of Barchester and its surroundings. “The Warden” is the first of the six Barsetshire chronicles.

Septimus Harding, the warden, oversees the well-being of elderly residents of the church shelter and manages its income. His peaceful, measured life comes to an end when the zealous reformer John Bold, courting Septimus’s daughter, launches a campaign against the shelter’s funds distribution, which he considers unjust—and inadvertently turns the anger of society and the press against the potential father-in-law.

Also included in this collection are the stories “The Two Heroines of Plumpington” and “A Souvenir of General Chasse.”
