Under strange circumstances, the art critic and actress Olga, well known among people in the capital circles, dies at her country house. According to the experts, death resulted from taking a medication contraindicated for her. Is it suicide, a fatal indiscretion—or… murder?

All those who were in the house during the last meal together fall under suspicion—relatives and guests of the deceased. The family’s friend invites the well-known lawyer Platon Smorodina to conduct an independent investigation.

Smorodina finds out that shortly before her death, Olga withdrew a significant sum from her bank account—money that was not found during the search. In addition, it is known that she was preparing a sensational novel for publication, one that would reveal secrets from behind the scenes of the top nomenklatura.

All these facts could very well have been a motive for the crime. The lawyer carefully establishes the role of each participant in that ill-fated evening and already suspects how it really happened. But at the very last moment, a new terrible incident occurs…
