Description
A doctor investigates the death of his patient. An intriguing Victorian detective story.

Philadelphia, 1875. Dr. Lydia Weston, one of the first women doctors, teaches anatomy at the Women’s Medical College, fighting for the right to practice medicine in a world dominated by men. One day, a distressed former patient comes to see her—a maid named Anna. Soon after, the girl’s body is found in the river, and her folded clothes wash up on the shore. The police quickly classify the incident as suicide and stop investigating. However, Dr. Weston doesn’t believe the official version—her professional experience and analytical mind tell her that Anna’s death was the result of violence. Together with the police officers Volker and Davis, they begin an investigation that will help uncover the dark secrets of the medical community. But time is running out—the killer is already hunting her.

“Death in Pieces” is not just a detective story. It is the story of a woman who was ahead of her time, a scientific thriller, and a perceptive portrait of an era in which science and superstition fought for influence in no small way. Ritu Mukherjee has practiced for more than fifteen years as a therapist, so the novel impresses with the accuracy of its medical descriptions and the subtlety of its understanding of human character.
