“The Tale of Igor’s Campaign” is a work filled with numerous literary riddles and mysteries. It was rewritten by hand over the centuries; it was read and studied, commented on and discussed. Manuscripts often disappeared in fire along with estates and monasteries—yet some copies survived miraculously, so that we could receive not a dry and indifferent, but a living and emotional perception of the anonymous yet talented authors of Russian words. This work reflects the grand and dramatic history of Rus’ with its feudal conflicts and complex relations with the Great Steppe, the tragedy of the Mongol-Tatar invasion, and the national upsurge that made it possible to break free from the yoke. The book also includes “The Word of Daniel the Stylite,” addressed to Prince Yaroslav Vladimirovich.
