Copied by hand for centuries, read and reread, commented on and discussed. His manuscripts burned along with estates and monasteries, and only separate copies survived by sheer miracle—so that we could receive not a dry, indifferent account, but a vivid, emotional artistic perception of the mostly anonymous geniuses of Russian words and the great and dramatic history of Rus— with its feudal internecine wars and complex, ambiguous relations with the Great Steppe, the national tragedy of the Mongol-Tatar yoke, and the great national upsurge that finally allowed this yoke to be cast off.
