To the general public, Rafael Sabatini is known above all as an excellent novelist—the author of more than fifty books. Among them, of course, are the famous “The Odyssey of Captain Blood” and “The Chronicles of Captain Blood.” But we would like to introduce you to another Sabatini—a writer of novellas, a master of the short story.
It took a great deal of effort to find the texts of the writer’s early works, but believe me, it was worth it. And although Rafael Sabatini himself, with the self-criticism characteristic of him, called his early creations nothing less than: “mistakes of my adolescent creative immaturity,” he nevertheless admitted that “on the other hand, they can contain some virtue and morality characteristic of youth—thanks to which we often forgive the shortcomings that accompany them.”
