One night, Aunt Bronya came to the village police officer. Her grandfather, Stepanich, heard something buzzing in the forest, saw it light up, grabbed his rifle, and went into that forest to see what had happened. Then a shot rang out in the woods—then another—and now Stepanich lies on a clearing, neither alive nor dead.
