Description
5th century BCE, Syracuse: during the Peloponnesian War, the Athenians end up as prisoners after a failed offensive. Two Syracusan potters, Gelon and Lampon, out of work and without means of survival, decide to stage Euripides’ “Medea,” recruiting actors from among the prisoners. The condition is knowing at least one line from the play. They will not only have to feed and provide the participants with costumes and sets, but also to attract ancient spectators who are hostile to the Athenians. This dark comedy shows how art becomes a matter of survival, with elements of absurd ancient humor that will appeal to fans of Madeline Miller and Jennifer Saint.
