Anna Shipilova’s debut collection of stories reflects the reflexions of growing up against the backdrop of a reality that is changing rapidly. It’s not only the author’s attempt to make sense of the present, but also a look at the future—which seems to be right at the threshold. Among its heroes are teenagers, young girls, and young women who face violence, betrayal, trauma, and new and new trials. Their world is unsettled and lacks support; loved ones are failing; the surrounding reality is collapsing before their eyes—they grow up in spite of everything. Despite the dark pictures of the future that turns out to be cast into the past, these stories are permeated with an inevitable ironic tone that keeps the light from being lost in the unrelenting darkness.
