Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910) is a writer of world stature. He paid special attention to children’s literature and the education of peasant children. At his estate in Yasnaya Polyana, the writer taught, talked with, and observed the life of the boys. His “Primer,” “New Primer,” and “Russian Books for Reading” filled a huge gap in public education.
