Description
The structure of the novel consists of three parts: a frame narrative, the main fairy tale (a fairy tale about Fedya), and “details.” In the frame story, the main characters are the carousel director and seven wooden horses, to whom the director tells fairy tales every night. On one night, the director says that all the fairy tales are over and now he will tell them the last one. This is the tale about a boy named Fedya who quarreled with his mother, ran into the forest, and then jumped off the Earth.
One of the horses interrupts the director and asks him to tell the details of what happened to the other, secondary characters of the fairy tale on that same day. These “details” take up the larger part of the novel. Mostly, their action takes place in an unnamed city and its surroundings, as well as in Africa. In the finale, the director ends the tale by saying that Fedya’s mother arrives for her son in a rocket, and the horses set to work, driving children around…
