The author of this remarkable monument of folk creativity, drawing on well-known sources of Scandinavian epic—“The Poetic Edda,” “The Prose Edda,” “The Saga of the Volsungs,” and others—retold the most impressive tales about gods and heroes. His retelling is very close to the original, but in certain cases the author delicately softened episodes of barbaric ferocity characteristic of Scandinavian sagas.
The ease of presentation, the poetic nature of many episodes, and the astonishing charm of mighty characters—from the father of the gods Odin, to Thor the red-bearded hero, the cunning Loki, and others—attract readers of all ages, but first of all teenagers who are seriously interested in the mythology of the peoples of Scandinavia.
