Description
In the late 2000s in Perm, Katya and Larisa—students of the psychology faculty and inseparable best friends—meet again after the summer holidays. They’ve been friends since childhood and share many interests, especially their love of rock music. Larisa becomes fascinated by a new role: she immerses herself in the image of a hippie, changing her clothing and behavior, and gets a new friend nicknamed Doc—much older and having been through Afghanistan. Katya has a secret: she sees scenes of the Afghan war in her dreams, details she couldn’t possibly know.

Over time, Larisa’s play stops being “just play,” and the connections between Katya, Larisa, and Doc become more complicated, intertwined with events from the distant past. Katya’s mystery gradually becomes part of Doc’s life.

“System Requirements” is a layered novel suffused with nostalgia for the attributes of the past: friendship bracelets, bandanas, squats, and songs to the sound of a guitar. It’s a touching story about growing up, finding yourself, and losing illusions.
