Description
“Sirush and Simbad” is a poignant novella about human destinies in an Armenian town in the 1960–80s, on the eve of the Spitak earthquake. Through the story of a young woman married without love, the author raises sharp questions about family traditions, moral pressure, and compelled self-giving. Sirush finds the resolve to break an humiliating bond and to find a person close in spirit—Sim bad’s teacher. Their quiet feelings and thirst for inner freedom collide with the mercilessness of prejudice and the price of trying to go against someone else’s will. The novella conveys the atmosphere of Armenian everyday life and the drama of personal resistance against the backdrop of an approaching disaster. This is a story about the cost of happiness, the ability to hope, and a tragedy after which it is no longer possible to live the same way.
