England, 1948. Clara Newton sends her résumé to the children’s home “Shilling Grange,” and—unexpectedly for herself and for all the residents—she becomes its new head. Many of her wards have no families; their lives are torn apart by the war, just as Clara’s life is. The war took her fiancé—a military pilot. But now the orphans desperately need her help, and Clara struggles to bear their suffering, though most of all she fears she won’t be able to handle it.
Next door lives Ivor, a former resident of the orphanage and a war hero. He doesn’t trust Clara, but he gets along well with the children. With his support and help, Clara begins to find her path.
Can she endure all the trials? And will she dare to open her heart to love again? For fans of the books and films “The Pianist,” “Schindler’s List,” “Life Is Beautiful,” “The Book Lovers and the Potato Peel Pie Society,” and “The Secret Garden.”
