Moscow, 2019. Colonel Oleg Yermilov is contacted once again by his old acquaintance—Olesya Merkulova. During preparation of materials for a documentary film, the ever-present journalist discovered interesting nuances in a dictation recording of an interview made about a year ago in Syria. Those two phrases and a small aside—something the Syrian Kurd allowed either by accident or on purpose during the interview—caught Olesya’s attention, and she decided to work on the translation of the interview in more detail. Ultimately, this led to a large-scale development by the Department of Military Counterintelligence, which helped not only to predict the Turks’ actions in their next troop operation in Syria, but also to plan countermeasures on both the intelligence and state levels.
