The novel takes place in the near future. An American aristocrat, Winston Rumford, on his own spaceship, descends together with his dog Kazak into a “chronosynchlast infundibulum,” after which the man and the dog are “smeared” across space and time. This means they constantly move between Earth, Mars, Saturn’s moon Titan, and Mercury, materializing on each planet for a few minutes at different intervals. Only on Titan are they present constantly.
One day, during materialization on Earth (and his materializations are planetary-scale events that any Earth resident dreams of witnessing), Rumford invites the young womanizer Malaki Constant to meet him and tells him that Constant has the gift to see Truth—whether it’s the past, the future, or even the thoughts of the person he’s speaking with. And therefore he knows that Constant is destined to become the husband of Winston’s current wife—Mrs. Beatrice Rumford. Both Constant and Beatrice Rumford herself try their best to make sure the prophecy does not come true.
