An old barge “Purgatory” slowly drifts through interstellar space. It carries a whole bunch of criminals sentenced in different worlds of the empire. Whoever isn’t there on board — cruel gangsters, unlucky smugglers, assault troops — the crew members are ordinary pilots and engineers; the guards captain is a maniac and psychopath; the ship doctor is a woman from an aristocratic family who prefers the company of gangsters and killers to the pompous cruel imperials; teenage brothers who recently lost their father, and even Han Solo with Chewbacca, languishing in solitary cells for their unruly temper and boundless love of freedom. Some of them die of boredom, others truly die in gunfights among gangsters and from the cruelty of the guards.
And just when the destination is within arm’s reach, the engines on the barge fail. What to do — sit stuck in the shallows and wait an unknown amount of time for a tow, or take advantage of a lucky coincidence: an abandoned imperial cruiser is drifting nearby… The commander makes the decision to send a group of soldiers and engineers onto the star destroyer to remove the equipment needed for repairs. And when they return — “Purgatory” turns into Hell…
