“The Spire” is a historical novel and a philosophical parable exploring the tiniest and darkest labyrinths of a soul obsessed with the “thirst for creation”…
A priest, Father Jocelin, is obsessed with the idea of raising above the city’s cathedral a spire unlike any in all of England. Yet both nature and people oppose his ambitious design: the temple’s foundation subsides, the supports bend, and the parishioners flee in fear. Services cease in the emptied cathedral, Father Jocelin’s case is handed over to the court of the Inquisition, but even this cannot make him stop the work. And a chain of inexplicable deaths connected with the construction forces one to wonder whom the priest serves as he raises the spire: God or the devil?
