The sleepy calm of a small French town is disrupted by the arrival of a young woman, Vianne, and her daughter. They come with a loud and vivid carnival parade, and when the carnival ends, the bright joy remains in Vianne’s eyes—she opens a chocolate shop here. In some wonderful way, she learns the town’s most intimate desires and offers everyone exactly that chocolate treat that makes them taste life again.
“Chocolate” is a story about kindness and tolerance, about resisting innocent temptations and entrenched righteousness. The Hollywood film of the same name, directed by Lasse Hallström (starring Juliette Binoche, Johnny Depp, and Judi Dench), was nominated for an Oscar in five categories and for a Golden Globe in four.
