ILLEGAL CONSUMPTION OF NARCOTIC DRUGS, PSYCHOTROPIC SUBSTANCES, THEIR ANALOGUES IS HARMFUL TO HEALTH. THEIR ILLEGAL TRAFFICKING IS PROHIBITED AND CARRIES LIABILITY ESTABLISHED BY LAW
USA, early twentieth century. Tusia Hazelly, despite prejudice, became a doctor, but a tragic mistake during surgery shattered her career: she no longer takes up a scalpel or a stethoscope. For the sake of her disabled son, Tusia gets by on a meager salary at a corset factory, and when that job disappears too, she reluctantly agrees to the offer of the charming entrepreneur Hughie. He runs a traveling troupe and, during performances, sells “miracle” elixirs, hoping that her medical license will lend the trade an appearance of legitimacy.
Tusia promises herself she will stay only until she pays off her debts, but Hughie has no intention of letting her go so easily — he has plans for her that are far more ambitious. And yet their true test awaits in Galveston, where the troupe stays for the winter: an unexpected September storm turns into a devastating hurricane that sweeps across the Gulf Coast. This disaster will force Tusia to believe again in medicine, in people, and in her own strength.
