These biographical essays were published about a hundred years ago in the series “The Life of Remarkable People,” carried out by F.F. Pavlenkov (1839–1900). Written in a genre new for that time—poetic chronicles and historical-cultural studies—these texts retain their value to this day. Intended “for ordinary people,” for the Russian provinces, today they can be recommended not only to bibliophiles, but to the broadest reading public: both to those who are entirely unacquainted with the history and psychology of great people, and to those for whom these subjects are a profession.
