The North

“It happens like this: the sun flies more and more slowly, more and more slowly, and hangs motionless. And everything stands encased, poured over forever in a greenish glass. Not far from the shore, on a black rock, a gull has spread its wings, sat down to take off—and will always remain sitting on that black rock. Above the smokestack of a glasshouse plant the smoke hardens, hangs as a clump of smoke.

A boy with a white head—twitching—leans over the side to rinse his hands in the water—stays, freezes.

For a minute, everything stands—this minute is night.

And then, hardly perceptibly, the sun stirs. It tightens—just a little more—and everything shatters: multicolored splinters splash into the sea; the gull lifts off the stone, and from somewhere at once hundreds of pink, piercing—an orange smoke flies, the boy-with-a-white-head pops out from the men’s boots in fright—and quickly, for work.”
