Sevastopol Sketches

Three short novellas devoted to the heroic defense of Sevastopol, in which Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy himself was a direct participant, tell of the war in its true and often horrifying manifestations. This war is devoid of romantic flair. It is ruthless and disgusting. It breaks people's characters and fates. And yet, at the same time, it reveals the inner beauty and heroism of real Russian patriots—people capable of preserving their love for their homeland despite everything, even when it is in dire trouble.
