Writer Vladislav Ravin doesn’t exactly shine with talent. He writes mediocrely; nobody invites him to seminars; his life is boring and dull. Another horror story he submitted to the editorial office is rejected by the secretary, Chervyakin, who sends it back for revisions.

But what was Ravin’s surprise when, one night, Chervyakin shows up in his apartment in a completely different role and offers the writer to become the literary hero of Chervyakin’s work!
