Description
Korney Chukovsky’s novella tells of his own childhood: instead of studying in a gymnasium, he had an “street school of life” and binge-reading, which he turned to after being unjustly expelled.
The novella by K. I. Chukovsky “The Silver Coat of Arms” is autobiographical in nature.
Little Kolya Korneychukov was expelled from the gymnasium by order of a decree “on the children of cooks.” Its essence was to admit children of the “lower classes” to education as rarely as possible, so that, having gained knowledge, they wouldn’t decide to rebel and raise others up in disobedience. Kolya was the son of a washerwoman, which meant that studying “was not meant for him.” But as often happens, power counts on one thing, and the outcome turns out to be the opposite.
Kolya grew up and became Korney Ivanovich Chukovsky—children’s writer, translator, literary critic, and one of the most educated people of the 20th century.
For middle school age.
