Grey Neck. Fairy Tales and Stories for Children

Mamin-Sibiryak’s Tales are not just stories, but a living conversation with nature, where every animal and bird has its own character. “Alenushka’s Tales,” dedicated to his daughter, teach children to love the world, to observe, and to believe in goodness.
Dmitry Narkisovich Mamin-Sibiryak (1852–1912) was a Russian prose writer and playwright, the author of novels, stories, and children’s tales.
The book includes tales and stories written in different years of the writer’s life.
From his earliest childhood, the writer deeply loved his native Ural nature, and in his works he described its beauty and grandeur. Nature in his works comes alive and becomes a direct participant in the narrative: “Grey Neck,” “The Forest Tale,” “The Green War,” “The Old House Sparrow.”
The cycle “Alenushka’s Tales” was dedicated by the writer to his daughter, Elena. In these tales, animals, birds, fish, plants, and toys live and talk: the Brave Hare, Komar Komarovich, Yorsh Yorshovich, the Fly, the toy Vanka. By telling of the fun adventures of animals and toys, the author teaches children to observe nature and life.
The writer had a special attitude toward children. He called the book for them a “living thread,” which leads a child out of the nursery and connects them with the wide world of life.
