The novel “St. Ives” is based on the story of the French nobleman Kerouel de St. Ives, who during the Napoleonic wars found himself a captive of the English.
The key events of the hero’s odyssey—chance acquaintance with the beauty Flora, escape from an Edinburgh prison, wandering full of adventures and dangers, return to Paris, a happy wedding, and—and finally—voluntary return to the country where he was imprisoned—are masterfully presented by the author.
