George Blake, a high-ranking member of British intelligence, secretly worked for the Soviet Union. In 1961 he was sentenced to 42 years in prison for passing the KGB information about all Western operations in which he participated, and for revealing the identities of hundreds of British agents operating “behind the Iron Curtain.” It was the longest espionage sentence ever handed down by a British court.
Using personal interviews with Blake, his own research, and documents from the Stasi, journalist and writer Simon Cooper reconstructs Blake’s biography—from a teenager who took part in Dutch resistance during World War II to a prisoner who made a bold escape from Wormwood Scrubs and spent his final years on a cottage outside Moscow, living to the age of 98.
