Кризис чужого возраста
In Masha Traub’s prose there is bright joy, quiet sadness, a sense of a dead end, and then—suddenly—hope. Making a loud debut in 2007 with the sincere novel «Собирайся, мы уезжаем», she went on to publish many books—hilariously funny and piercingly sad. Based on «Дневник мамы первоклассника» and «Домику на юге», feature films were made.
The collection «Кризис чужого возраста» brings together stories about life and death, about small miracles, about loved ones who never became truly close, and about strangers who unexpectedly turn out to be the most familiar. This honest, touching prose is built on irony, precise observations, and recognizable everyday details—details in which it is easy to see one’s own life.
The characters of the stories and sketches go through different crises—each in their own way: someone chooses silence, someone insists they are arguing with death, as if measuring strength with it in arm wrestling. There are also attentive notes about today, and plots that can be taken for mysticism. “I’ll sort out this trouble with beans,” my grandmother would say when she wanted to comfort me. In the village where I grew up, people divined the future with beans. And if it’s mysticism, then it’s very kind.
На память милой Стефе
Before you is both an epistolary novel and a story about archival searches that, step by step, lead to the revelation of an almost detective-like family secret. The book weaves together different times and countries; Russian, French, Italian, English, and even Provencal can be heard. Letters from the past and a girl’s album coexist alongside electronic messages from the present. This kaleidoscope of events and feelings helps a very young person who finds themselves in a foreign environment to find support, love, and to discover a new—large—family.
The novel «На память милой Стефе» is about people who are unlike each other in age, character, and even language—who wander through back alleys that seem чужими, only to discover that they are, in the end, their own. A story rooted far back in the past and seemed incomprehensible and frightening suddenly turns into joy—into happy recognition and the finding of each other.
