Description
The 1960s. Every summer, hundreds of Native American families travel to the blueberry plantations of the U.S. state of Maine to earn a little extra money by picking berries. Six-year-old Joe works alongside the adults, and at the same time is supposed to look after his younger sister, Ruthie. But one day he leaves the girl for just a minute on their favorite boulder—and Ruthie disappears without a trace. From that moment on, Joe will carry the feeling of guilt through his whole life and try to escape from it.

Meanwhile, not far away, in the suburbs of Boston, Norma grows up—the only cherished daughter of well-off parents who had previously had children born dead. Norma shows intelligence early and truly loves her family, yet she’s troubled by unusually vivid dreams of blue fields, vanished childhood photographs, and the adults’ unspoken things. Her parents clearly are hiding something, and it will take Norma decades to uncover the truth.
