“Satan” (“Satan”)—that’s what, in the USA, the Soviet R-36M missile complex was called: the most powerful and technologically advanced intercontinental ballistic missile of its time, built on the logic of guaranteed retaliatory strike. Up to 8 separable warheads, flight range up to 16,000 km, and mortar-like launching from a specially protected silo made “Satan” a weapon with virtually no equivalents.
But later versions of the complex—R-36M UTТХ and R-36M2 “Voevoda”—surpassed the original modification in capabilities and combat effectiveness. Up to 10 warheads, around a thousand means for penetrating missile defenses (decoys), and exceptional resistance to the effects of a nuclear explosion—not only in the launch facilities, but also on the missile itself along its trajectory—ensured the inevitability of retaliation even if modern missile defense systems interfered.
According to assessments by military specialists, ten “Voevodas” in their maximum configuration are enough to disable about 80% of the United States’ industrial potential and destroy roughly two-thirds of its population; at the same time, 46 such missiles are on Russia’s combat alert.
The book gathers detailed information on the most formidable nuclear weapon of the Strategic Rocket Forces (RVSN). This collector’s full-color edition is supplemented with hundreds of unique drawings and photographs.
