Two very different people — the alcoholic Ivan Brosov and university lecturer Professor Yuri Dolgov — unexpectedly find themselves in the same situation: their places in life are taken by people who resemble them. The impostors appropriate their jobs, families, and apartments. What is to be done, and who exactly should be considered real?
