"It was a wonderful time of world creation. Our own world in all its multilingual, motley, many-faced fullness. It was a time when we suddenly dared to stick our noses out the window, where tempting winds of wanderlust blew in. Now I think: how did that happen—after all, there wasn’t more money in the family than before? Did we become braver? Did a dream of seeing the world wink at us and mumble that, well, it doesn’t really matter—we live only once, and money is always in short supply; that somehow, in installments, and then little by little we’ll pay it off…

In short, fate responded to the noble impulse of reckless poverty and released us into the Big World. And it all started to rush and spin: we felt the taste and power of the winds of travel—Amsterdam and Paris, Prague and Nice, Madrid and Provence, Venice and Rome, Naples and Sorrento… The world turned out to be hot, bubbling, passionate, magical… because it greedily opened itself and gave itself to the imagination of a writer and an artist; as if the world knew it would be embodied again and again in paintings and books.

In general, the stories, novellas, and tales collected under the cover of this book were created in a very sympathetic decade of our lives, when the children had already grown up, but parents were still “oho-ho,” and we felt a certain portion of freedom—we worked a lot and traveled a lot… because our work is tightly tied to impressions; it’s unceasing labor of sight, imagination, and thought…

And, surprisingly, it was in those years that the discovery of Israel also happened—that true, deep understanding of the country that became native and inseparable, a real home for us and our children. Both our son and daughter served in the army—an especially special bond with spirit and land, with love and the fates of loved ones."
