N.K. Roerich, the famous Russian artist and thinker, expressed hope in his works that the Russian people would remain kind, responsive, and hardworking—unlike other peoples who may be cruel and treacherous. He believed that evil should be sought elsewhere, not on Russian soil. In his works, Roerich analyzes the spiritual origins of Russia and its role as a bearer of a unique civilizational light. He is also concerned with broader social and human problems, such as lack of spirituality, rudeness, cruelty, and wars—problems he considers the result of ignoring higher values. As a solution, he offers his teaching of “Living Ethics,” which, in his view, will help humanity find a new path to development.
