In Moscow, on Prechistenka, a moneylender is strangled in her own home. And somewhere in the southern province, a landowner—an absentee colonel—tries to prove that the man he encountered is actually his runaway former serf, not exactly his own but the same kind—one who isn’t a wackmaster, not a wackmaster, but a fugitive serf.
The story was written and published in 1875.
