The main character is the old, gloomy miser Ebenezer Scrooge, who has long loved nothing and no one except his own money. He does not understand the joy others feel about the approaching Christmas and the holiday season, and he snubs his kind nephew’s invitation to celebrate Christmas with him and his family. He cannot understand why people spend all day having fun and not working if it doesn’t benefit them, and he refuses to donate to charity to help needy children. On Christmas Eve, Scrooge reluctantly agrees to let his clerk go for Christmas, closes his office and goes home. But at home, a spirit appears before him—the ghost of his late business partner, Jacob Marley, who died on Christmas Eve seven years earlier…
